Tips for travelling by car

Before setting out, you should check your tires, the oil and all your car’s safety systems. Keep this advice in mind too:

  1. Route. If you are not very familiar with it, programme your sat nav before setting out. It will guarantee you a safer and trouble-free journey.
  2. Keep your mobile phone charged. Make sure your phone has enough battery in case there is a mishap and you need to make a call. Keep your car charger at the ready just in case. It will come in handy if there is a problem.
  3. Clothing and footwear. Wear comfortable clothes if the trip is to be a long one. If you need to wear a suit, remove your jacket or you will begin to feel uncomfortable before you are half way there, and never drive with an overcoat or coat on. It will constrict your movement. Don’t wear flip flops even in summer, or high-heeled shoes, as they are not appropriate for the pedals. Try and wear shoes that are as comfortable as possible.
  4. Rest. Every two hours. It does not necessarily need to be a long stop. Just 5 or 10 minutes to stretch your legs, go to the toilet and have something to drink. Don’t make excuses. 10 minutes adds very little to your journey time. Your safety comes first.
  5. Drink. You need to be hydrated because that decreases the sensation of tiredness and drowsiness. A sugary drink will provide energy and help you stay alert and awake. Alcohol is forbidden.
  6. Food. You are recommended not to have a large meal before setting out on or during your trip. A slow and lengthy digestion makes you drowsy.   In addition, your intestinal mobility is reduced because you are seated for such a long time and you may have gas. You’re better off having something light (a sandwich, some titbit or other…) and take some snacks, like salt-free nuts, or some chocolate, in case you feel hungry.
  7. Time. The best time for travelling is in the morning. The driver has rested overnight and the sun is high, so there is plenty of light. You may not always be able to choose the moment but try to travel by day. Your biological rhythms slow down in the dark and you secrete melatonin. Even if you rest during the day, travelling at night makes you sleepy and that’s why it is more dangerous.
  8. Distractions. It is good to listen to music or the radio while you travel, but only as long as it does not distract your attention. Do not change CDs or search for a radio station when driving. A momentary lapse of attention can cost you dearly. Lighting a cigarette, or looking for sunglasses can also distract your attention. Keep that in mind.
Drive safely and you will avoid unnecessary risks. Have a good trip!
