Why not get some exercise?

Why not get some exercise?

It´s never too late to start doing sports. Your health is at stake.

All right. Sometimes you don’t feel like doing exercise. You are tired after work… The kids… the house. All you want to do is sit down if you get a couple of minutes, have a rest and watch TV or read a book. Relaxing with a film or a book is great. Of course it is! But the physical and psychological benefits of doing a bit of exercise are undeniable.

Which are the most common excuses?

  1. Bad weather.

There’s nothing you can do about it, but with all the weatherproof sports gear available these days and the pleasant temperatures inside the gym, cold and rain shouldn’t mean you have to stay at home. What’s more, if you know some exercise routines you can do indoors, there is no excuse.

  1. I don’t have the time.

This is one of the most popular excuses, but it is amazing that the more we have to do the better use we make of our time, and vice-versa. Of course you can find 40 minutes, twice a week to go for a walk or a run, or to do a spinning class. Even if you can only find the time at weekends, it doesn’t matter. You are not training to be an Olympic athlete. You just want to get fitter and feel better.

  1. I haven’t done anything for years and I don’t want to risk an injury.

If you suddenly decide to run a marathon or compete in the triathlon, then that’s silly. That’s not the idea! Find something suitable for your age and fitness level. If all you can manage is walking, then that’s fine. After all, Power Walking is really trendy at the moment. Later on, as you get fitter and stronger, you may feel like running or joining a keep fit or dance class.

  1. It’s boring.

This is the worst excuse of all. You may not like cycling or running, but not everyone has to do the same sport, and these days there are so many options that it’s impossible that you can’t find something to motivate you. Do a group activity with your friends, with some music so you can move to the rhythm, or circuit training so you won’t have time to get bored. Of course, if you don’t try, you’ll never know what you like.

  1. I’m too tired.

It’s true that sometimes we are exhausted when we get home from work. You may not believe it, but the endorphins released when you exercise revitalise you, you will feel less tired and you will sleep better, too.

Why is regular sport a good idea?

  • Because it improves cardiovascular health and lung capacity.
  • Because it makes you more resistant and strengthens you muscles and bones.
  • Because it helps to keep your weight down.
  • Because it is good for coordination and reduces the risk of falls and injuries.
  • Because it is helps you to sleep better.
  • Because it is good for your defences.
  • Because it helps to banish stress and anxiety.
  • Because it improves concentration and memory.
  • Because it makes you feel happier, boosts your self-esteem and your capacity to deal with everyday problems.
If you want to exercise, then you’ll find a way. People don't want to do things will always find an excuse.
